Each year, on the seventh day of Kartik Shukla Paksha—exactly a week after Diwali—devotees across Gujarat and beyond come together to honor the birth anniversary of Shri Jalaram Bapa, known as Jalaram Jayanti. This day commemorates the life and legacy of a saint revered for his deep devotion, humility, and lifelong dedication to helping others.

He was born in Virpur, Gujarat, on Kartik Sud Satam in Vikram Samvat 1856 (November 14, 1799). Jalaram Bapa dedicated his life to selfless service, offering food, shelter, and care to all in need, regardless of caste or religion. His inspiring journey from a young boy deeply devoted to Lord Rama to a revered saint is filled with moving stories of faith and miraculous events that continue to uplift his followers.

Early Life and Devotion to Lord Rama

He was born into a humble Lohana family. His parents, Rajbai and Pradhan Thakkar, noticed early on his profound devotion to Sita-Ram, as he began chanting their names continuously from the age of five. Though his father wanted him to study and work in the family business, young Jalaram was more inclined toward serving monks and travelers, a passion that only grew with time. At the age of 16, he married Virbai, a woman equally devoted to charity and spirituality. Together, they dedicated themselves to the service of saints and travelers, setting the stage for a lifetime of compassion and selflessness.

The Beginning of Sadavrat: A Lifelong Mission of Feeding the Needy

At 18, Jalaram became a disciple of Bhoja Bhagat of Fatehpur, a saint who guided him in his spiritual journey. With his Guru’s blessing, he started a Sadavrat—an unbroken vow of charity-where he pledged to provide free food to anyone in need at any time. This tradition, founded on values of love and inclusivity, became a cornerstone of his mission, drawing people from all walks of life to receive his kindness and blessings.

Miracles and Divine Signs

Over the years, several miraculous events cemented Bapa’s reputation as a divine figure. One day, a saint gifted him an idol of Lord Rama, foretelling the arrival of Hanuman. Shortly after, an idol of Hanuman appeared miraculously from their grain storage. This storage, now famously known as the inexhaustible grain reserve, symbolized divine blessing, as the food supply in his home never depleted despite endless visitors. Stories of these miracles spread widely, bringing many villagers and travelers to his doorstep for help, blessings, and inspiration.

Bapa’s Divine Test

According to legend, one day, a saint came to Jalaram’s home and asked to take Veerbai, his wife, as a servant. To the surprise of many, Jalaram willingly agreed, demonstrating his complete surrender to God’s will. Soon after, the saint revealed his true identity and returned Veerbai, leaving behind a danda (staff) and a jholi (sack), which he cherished as divine gifts from God. These items remain at the Virpur temple and are venerated by devotees as symbols of Jalaram Bapa’s unwavering faith and humility.

A Name Revered by All

The people of Gujarat and beyond began calling him “Bapa” as a mark of respect for his selflessness and compassion. Even people from other religions, such as the Muslim community, revered him. When Jamal, the son of a Muslim merchant, fell seriously ill, his family turned to Jalaram Bapa. Miraculously, the boy recovered, and the grateful family vowed to contribute grain to the Sadavrat, joining people from various communities in honoring Bapa’s legacy.

Virpur Temple: A Place of Faith and Service

Today, Virpur, the birthplace and residence of Jalaram Bapa, is a major pilgrimage site where devotees come from all over the world. His home was transformed into a temple, and it preserves his sacred belongings, including the revered danda and jholi, along with idols of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The temple has a unique tradition—since the year 2000, it has stopped accepting any donations, yet the food supply miraculously remains abundant. Free meals are served to all visitors, upholding the spirit of Sadavrat established by Bapa. Daily offerings include traditional sweets like bundi and gathiya in the morning, and meals of khichdi and kadhi in the evening.

His life teaches that true wealth lies in giving, with the famous saying: “Panchi pani pine se ghate na sarita neer, dharma kare dhan na ghate sahai kare Raghuvir,” meaning “Just as rivers do not diminish when birds drink from them, similarly wealth does not reduce by helping others as Lord Ram will always provide.”
